Lake Garda (Italian Lago di Garda or Benaco) is the largest lake in Italy. It is located in Northern Italy, about half-way between Venice and Milan. It is in an alpine region and was formed by glaciers at the end of the last ice age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the south-east), Brescia (south-west), and Trentino region (north). The lake is a major tourist destination, with a number of hotels and resorts along its shore.
The mild climate created by the lake can live in a real oasis with ideal temperatures even in winter. Despite the air of apparent stasis, in fact, there are numerous events held even during the coldest months.
Until AD 800 Lake Garda was known as Benacus and origin of the name, opinions differ. For some, this name derives Benacus from the ancient city which stood at Toscolano and sank after the earthquake. Others derive from the Nago and Naco, the buttress of Mount Baldo, which is located near the foot of Mount Torbole penis. The present name began to appear, and gradually replace the original, after Charlemagne a county land Garda: the importance of, Garda had jurisdiction over the lake, especially between the IX and XI century . However, the name Benacus long survive, and still stands in the form Italian Benàco.
For the particular morphological conformation and happy, the whole lake basin has a mild climate with an average annual temperature of about 13 degrees. These climatic conditions favor the development of a generous vegetation.
From the historical point of view, Lake Garda offers interesting insights: dwelling settlements from prehistoric era to the Serene Venetian Republic, the presence of the French Empire to the vicissitudes of the Habsburg Empire, until the newest republic of Salò and many others.
